Virtual South Town Art Walk Weekend 2020!

The 9th Annual South Town Arts Walk has decided to keep our community safe by going virtual this year. NEW MURAL!! "Corvallis- We are el corazòn of the valley"

 

This month I had the wonderful opportunity to help facilitate the collaborative design & installation of a new (temporary) mural in South Corvallis! The Nest Artist Collective, a group of 8 artists, joined together in creating " a love letter to Corvallis". We are all moms navigating the new normal during this pandemic. Our intention has been to brighten the space, boost morale and provide a visual sense of community that serves to uplift during this challenging time.

This Spring, as you all know, has been challenging the way in which we connect as a community. The precautions put in place to keep our community safe in response to COVID-19 has prevented in person teaching at my home studio. In lieu of in person classes I decided to offer an experimental class based on supply kits and online tutorials to a handful of my existing students who wished to continue to create at home during this time.  I called the class CSClay ( Community Supported Clay). Having a creative outlet can be huge in processing emotions during difficult times ( for children and adults alike). This class served as a good way to stay connected to students and offer inspiration and tutorials guiding them in engaging projects that were completed at home ( with a few porch pick up trips back and forth for firing). We focused on Spring theme projects including fairy doors, ceramic wind chimes, berry bowls, stepping stones and more. Here are a few photos of students working on their projects at home.

The Nest; An Emerging Artist Collective

I am excited to announce the emergence of The Nest gallery in January 2020! The Nest; An Artist Collective ( formerly known as Voices Gallery) is re-emerging into a new space in the Conifer Wellness Building at 139 SW 3rd St in downtown Corvallis ( up the stairs to the left of Re-Style Home Store). The Nest will be participating in the Third Thursday Corvallis Art Walk ( CAW) each month in 2020. Dawn Lamar Figueroa

Dawn is a Corvallis artist currently working in the medium of colored pencil. She

received a B.A. in Visual Communications and Philosophy/Religion from Kean University in New Jersey.

Her focus of study was illustration and she was trained in photo-realism. She has a strong attention to

detail and considers the act of drawing a meditative practice. Most of her inspiration comes from nature

and world cultures. She is curator of The Historical and Cultural Textile and Apparel Collection at OSU,

and she is Manager of the ArtShop at The Arts Center in Corvallis.

New Street Mural in South Corvallis!

  On Sunday July 28th, after months of planning and design, a community street mural was painted at the intersection of Lilly Ave. and Bethel St. in South Corvallis. The work was completed by over 40 volunteers from the community. A small team of neighbors including myself, Rebecka Weinsteiger, Dana Monroe, Katy Blye and Betsy Dasenko worked together with the City as well as the neighborhood at large to make this project happen. The project was inspired by the JANA Street Mural of 2017 ( on 11th and Taylor ST). This placemaking mural project will be featured at Open Streets, a free street festival on August 18th, 2019 that encourages active transportation and engages the community to create spaces where people want to walk, bike and play. In it's third year, Open Streets will happen between two parks in high-density low-income and working class neighborhoods, Lilly Park and Tunison Park.

April Showers bring May Flowers; the Whimsical Ceramic Art of Diana Ryan

My featured show was at Voices Gallery During the third Thursday Corvallis Arts Walk (CAW) this month.  Voices Gallery is an all female collective of 10 local artsits that show during the Corvallis downtown CAW each month.  For this show, I created a body of work in clay and mixed media- fibers and natural found objects. Shown were a series of "petal pots" made using wheel throwing and hand building techniques in porcelain/ paper clay that were fired to cone 6 and then re fired at lower heat with lusters. Additionally displayed were original mixed media paintings and large scale macrame pieces with ceramic elements incorporated. Pictured below are some photos from the show.  Voices Gallery is a collective of 10 local women artists located in downtown Corvallis under the psychedelic eagle mural on 4th St.  I have been privileged to have been involved with this awesome collective since 2016. In addition to showing every Third Thursday as part of the Corvallis Arts Walk, Voices also participates in group shows and exhibitions. This month all 10 of us hung our work at Imagine Coffee located off of Philomath Blvd in Corvallis just West of 53rd St. We are a collective of artists with varied styles and themes, yet somehow our work seems to merge so well together. Our show opening and reception will take place on March 9th from 2-4pm at Imagine Coffee.  For this show I am displaying some functional pottery/ tea sets as well as a brand new series of Macrame Wall Hangings with Clay Elements that I've been really enjoying creating! I wanted to share some photos of the show I have hanging at Interzone Inc. this month. Interzone is a funky coffee shop on Monroe St in Corvallis that is known for their great coffee, delicious vegetarian menu (with awesome extended weekend menu) and occasionally hosts local punk bands & noise shows. Interzone also happens to be where I had my first barista job in Corvallis after moving back in 2007 from Eugene. I have had several shows here over the years and am excited to be showing again this month. For this show, I created 5 brand new pieces of work as well as showing 3 pieces created in 2007 for my featured show at Voices Gallery. All of the work is painted with acrylic paint and I've used handmade 3D Ceramic Elements in every piece. Clay with Bae Couples Class this February!

This February I hosted a couples class for partners interested in pursuing creative clay projects together. Students worked individually and collaboratively on projects using both wheel throwing and hand building techniques. I hired a photographer to come and capture some photos of the couple's working in clay together. A portion of the proceeds was also donated to CARDV (the Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence in Corvallis). It was a great class and a fun way to spend a few weekends around Valentine's Day making hands on memories in clay. I've also included the photo that I used for promoting the workshop where my husband and I re-created the scene from the movie "Ghost" and that photo shoot was a blast! Shout out to Mica Habarad for the great photos and the couples for a fun class!

It is such a pleasure to organize and host for this event each year! This year is especially exciting because it is the first year I will be welcoming art walkers into my finished studio space! Mom's Night Out Workshops- Supporting Mom's and Building Community

I have recently started hosting "Mom's Night Out" Workshops at the studio. This series of monthly workshops is geared toward supporting moms, caregivers and female identified folks in all stages of life, through intergenerational community and creativity. Each month Diana Rose Studio will offer a workshop in a creative medium. All materials and supplies will be provided for project. Guest artists will visit from the surrounding community to instruct some of the workshops. A portion of the proceeds for each workshop will be donated to Proud Mama Support Services to help fund the Perinatal Support Group in Corvallis. At each workshop, a liaison from Proud Mama Support Services will help facilitate a safe space in which we can all support each other through the joys AND challenges of motherhood. During each workshop, participants will complete a personal art project to take home as well as a collaborative piece symbolizing our support for one another as moms. My goal is to give mom's/ caregivers a creative outlet, help build community and fundraise for Proud Mama Support Services. I have invited local female artists/ entrepreneurs to come lead projects and make community connections. 

The first workshop was a macrame workshop during the month of September, led by yours truly where participants learned a basic macrame knot with many pattern variations and created a wall hanging to take home.

The second workshop was led by Laurel Buley of Rambling Rose Botanicals and focused on Self- Care. Participants created a group tea blend as well as individual tea blends based on their herbal preferences. We also made some body scrubs, herbal bath soaks and handmade clay essential oil diffusers. We sat with the herbs as we processed them, stripping the leaves off the stems and discussing properties of the herbs as well as ways we each practice self-care and what that looks like for different people. The aromatherapy in the studio was simply intoxicating as we sampled Rambling Rose Teas and created our herbal goodies. My favorite blend from the class was the Rosemary Ginger Salt Scrub. I've included the recipe below:

1/4 Cup oil of choice ( we used Sunflower oil)

Pinch of ground ginger

1 tsp ground rosemary

A few drops sweet orange essential oil

*Use as a body scrub in the shower

The next mom's night out workshop is November 4th from 5:30-7:30 and will be hosting the Mandala Lady for Mandala Coloring as Meditation. Here is the class description and registration info:

Doodling and coloring are known to activate the reward centers of the brain in the prefrontal cortex. Allowing ourselves to play with colored pens and paper can create a wonderful opportunity to calm, center, and de-stress. For those of us with an inner critic, coloring offers us a low-risk chance to practice self-compassion and set self-criticism aside. 

Plus, compared to other mediums, pen and paper may more easily fit into the busy life of moms, with all its interruptions and curious little hands that get interested in our creative projects.

During this workshop you will explore three unique ways to meditate and tap into your own inner wisdom by coloring different forms of mandalas:

A pre-drawn mandala
An in-the-moment doodle mandala
A free-form mandala by way of a guided meditation

As part of the workshop we’ll also cover such topics as: how meditation can help us with stress, depression, or other mood issues, how to set intentions, a variety of coloring techniques, and different ways to color intuitively.

All materials and coloring media will be provided. If you have a favorite coloring medium that you like to use, you’re welcome to bring/use it during the workshop. You’ll also receive some mandalas to color to take home.

About the Instructor:
Maureen Frank is a Mandala Artist and Intuitive Channel. She began her Mandala journey after her 1999 trip to Egypt. Inspired by ancient art, nature, architecture, and patterns she created well over 200 mandala designs and art pieces since. Maureen likes to play with a variety of media including color pencils, gel pens, poured inks, markers, watercolors, and acrylics; each giving a different feel and texture to her art. Coloring mandalas, for her, acts as a creative form of meditation as well as an enjoyable calming practice. When setting an intention before coloring, she receives inner guidance and insights during and afterwards, making for a powerful coloring experience.

Leonard Street Mural Project

On May 19th, 2018 Local Art Teacher Dana Monroe and Community Artist Diana Ryan led a 3 hour workshop at the annual Lincoln Elementary School Carnival. At this workshop community members and Lincoln families were given the opportunity to participate in painting whimsical farm characters on panels that, when finished, will be installed into a Community Mural at a wall facing the Leonard Street Community Garden in South Town. The Mural project is being sponsored by Willamette Housing Services and was approved for a Neighborhood Improvement grant by the city. The finished mural will add beauty and intrigue to a low-income neighborhood and will be an attraction for neighbors to extend their walks throughout the neighborhood.

The bulk of the mural was painted in 5 days in Mid July, 2018 using 3 tiers of scaffolding to reach the top of this 25 foot high wall. Dana and I met in the mornings and evenings to beat the mid day heat, with our kiddos in tow. We enjoyed connecting with neighbors interested in the project, listening to the hustle and bustle of diverse families and residents, and seeing familiar faces from the local Elementary school playing in the community garden.

The finishing touches of the mural were painted in early August as part of the "National Night Out" community event. Local residents and kids had the opportunity to paint flowers in the foreground of the mural as the community came together in the shared space to enjoy food and connect with their community. It was a huge success and was included in the local newspaper-  Click here to view the article in the Gazette Times about the project. Many thanks to our supporters: the Willamette Neighborhood Housing Services, a city of Corvallis Neighborhood Empowerment Grant and the AARP of Oregon. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to paint the first mural in South Corvallis and look forward to future South Town Mural projects (spoiler alert- the next one is being painted on the side of my art studio)!! Pottery Night Fundraiser to Support Postpartum Moms

This month Diana Rose Studio hosted a pottery night fundraiser for Corvallis Proud Mama Services Perinatal Support Group. Diana Rose Studio donated 40% of the proceeds for the class to the upcoming "Climb out of the Darkness" event. Climb out of the Darkness is an annual event around the country near the longest day of the year to symbolize the struggle against PMADs (Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders) and the resilience and strength of those who deal with these struggles. The 2018 Climb out of the darkness is happening Saturday, July 21st from 10am-2pm at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Corvallis. It was such a pleasure sharing my creative space with this group of mom's and sharing an evening of creating and sharing our experiences as mothers. Featured Show at Voices Gallery

I had a wonderful featured show and reception at Voices Gallery on the May 17th downtown Corvallis Art Walk. The theme of the show was "All Things Tea". Displayed in the gallery was all work made this year in the new studio including 6 large tea sets and 4 small child size sets as well as loads of mugs and tea accessories. Laurel Buley of Rambling Rose Botanicals featured some beautiful organic herbal infusions and tea blends and handed out samples of her teas. Tea Sets are one of my favorite things to make and I was happy to have the opportunity to create some fun sets for the show!
